Basic Lessons I Taught in Writing an Academic Essay

As a secondary school teacher for students in the year 10 and 11 levels, I always made an effort to prepare my pupils for university or college life by teaching them some basic lessons on the various academic writing task they would do in the higher education level, including the differences of academic essay writing in the higher education level compared to the essay writing tasks that they performed in their secondary education. In my lesson on academic essay writing for the higher education level, I discussed the general aspects of university or college essay writing.

I told my pupils that the making a written academic essay outline is essential because it would organize their ideas, points and arguments that would be included in the actual essay they would write. Each paragraph in the introduction, body and conclusion should be organized and have a coherent flow of reading. Another important lesson that I told them is that they should develop their skills for proofreading and editing of the drafts or initial works of their essays. I explained to them that to be effective and efficient in proofreading and editing because it would enable them to come up with the final versions of their academic essays that are high quality and well-written so that they are ready for submission to their lecturers. In proofreading and editing an academic essay, I told them that they should be sure that the document is free of any errors in grammar and spelling, punctuation, and make sure that the facts and other information in the essay is accurate and updated.
