Tips to strengthen your vocabulary

One of the greatest challenges in writing an academic essay is having a weak vocabulary. Having a weak vocabulary means one does not have an intensive or extensive knowledge of the words and phrases associated with a certain language. This means that a student has a few word options to use when writing academic compositions. Having a strong, vocabulary, meanwhile, allows a student to grasp with little difficulty the definitions or translations of words used in a certain language. Having a strong vocabulary is a big advantage to a student since it allows him to write any composition with ease without digging for words to use. But how can a student strengthen his vocabulary? Here are some tips how. The easiest way to improve your vocabulary is to read and read. However, you should be selective in your reading materials.

 It is advisable to read intellectual reading materials like newspapers and news magazines. Intellectual books and an academic essay are also advised. Allot some time every day for intellectual reading. Spend quality time in reading quality materials. It is advisable to do your reading on a place or situation wherein you could focus all your attention into the material. It is also advisable to avoid distractions as much as possible. Highlight words that are vague to you. You could do this by encircling or underlining the word. Try to come up with own definition of the word by using context clues. After doing that, compare your definition to one given by a dictionarys. It is fairly easy to forget a newly found word if you are not using it. After knowing what a new word means, try using it during conversations and other occasions. You may also use the new word by writing an academic essay.
